AOL and Yahoo plan to charge others for their own short comings

In the newest round of spam fighting tactics AOL and Yahoo plan to charge others for priority e-mailing status. Sounds like a multi-tiered e-mail system, sound familiar like SBC and Verizon’s ideas on a multi-tiered internet.

“Lets charge others to access our customers”
Basically, since AOL and Yahoo can’t seem to create a Spam filter that actually works, they want to charge other’s so their e-mail doesn’t get caught in their faulty spam system. This idea has potential but it will no doubt end up just being another issue that will get used wrong and adopted by all the big boys with dollar signs in their eyes, and in turn, will push out the little guy who is just trying to get started. I can see a lot of retailers no longer offering e-mail receipts or adding perhaps a little check box in their check out process that says ” Click here for an e-mail receipt” and charging the customer any where from 25 cents to a dollar. AOL and Yahoo say they will not charge their users for e-mail but come on, you can’t charge the big companies and not expect it to trickle down to the end users, that’s the way it works in all industries whether on the internet or not.
This just goes to defend what I have been saying for years, free e-mail from giants like AOL and Yahoo is just not good to use. I can’t count how many times I have told clients of mine or friends or even strangers that ask me or advice (yea, that actually happens quite often, odd….) to get ride of AOL, especially their e-mail, all it does is cause headaches.
Buy a domain, their cheap and e-mail for a year is even cheaper. Yea it’s not free but you will get no, or very very little, spam and you will be sure to get ALL of your e-mail, no one else will be able to dictate what e-mail you get and what you will not.

America is Sue Happy!!!

This is absolutely ridiculous, some idiot in California is actually trying to sue Apple claiming that the iPod is “inherently defective in design and “not adorned with adequate warnings regarding the likelihood of hearing loss.

What a bunch of Bull, I mean come on can’t anyone take responsibility for their own actions anymore. First the case where that woman sued McDonalds claiming they gave her coffee that was to hot, if your not smart enough to know coffee is hot then you should not be allowed to roam around free, you might hurt yourself, oh wait she did.

Have you ever heard of Generation Naming, you know Gen-X and the Baby Boomers, well there’s one generation they call “The Entitled Generation”. Let’s take that one step further, I think we should be called The Entitled Nation. Don’t get me wrong I love America and spend four years in the Marines defending her, and I would do it all over again without thinking about it.

However, I think this great nation or a large part of it anyways, has come to think the rest of the world owes them. It seems to be very rare that anyone nowadays wants to take responsibility for their own actions (I know I said that already, but its true). If someone hurts them selves then all they do is look for someone else to blame. There should be a clause in the Law, the stupidity clause, if you’re too stupid to know better than you can’t blame someone else for your mistake.

Don’t get me wrong I believe there is a distinct difference between stupidity and ignorance, and there is nothing wrong with ignorance. But if you something stupid, it’s no ones fault but your own.

So listen up America

Stop being stupid and take responsibility for your own actions.

Sony’s bouncing balls…

A few months ago Sony closed down part of San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood to film a commercial with over 250,000 superballs bouncing down the hill. This is awesome, I’m a bit surprised that they did not use Computer Graphics to create it but it good to see someone actually doing something for real though.

Sex Sells…for a lot!!!

The infamous domain sex.com was to Boston-based Escom LLC for a reported $14 million. Man I wish I had thought of buying that domain way back when everyone thought the Internet was just a fad. You can find out more at XBiz.

However, I’m not convinced that domains are work as much as they used to be. With more and more people relying on search engines to find what they want, the domain that info sits on is not as important as it used to be. Try going to Google.com and searching for “sex”, sex.com does not even show up in the first few pages (I only looked at the first 3 pages then I got bored and stopped). For $14 million you would expect to get top ranking wouldn’t you?

AT&T (SBC) is at it again, with a twist….

Referring to the article on arsTechnica it looks like Rick Lindner and his crew is looking for a way to legitimize creating a multi tier network. Sure they would love to offer “Improved” services over their pipes for their customers. But those improved services would be paid for by their customers in the end.

If AT&T charged service providers like Microsoft or Vonage to run there services over their networks they will in turn have to pass that expense onto their customers, so one way or another we will be the ones paying more because AT&T wants to be greedy.

It’s just not ethical to charge twice for the same thing. And it’s certainly not a good way to do business, I know I would switch ISP’s if the one I was one started to implement this anti Network Neutrality practice.
